The first nine months of 2018 registered a record in the volumen invested due to:

  • The high number of megadeals closed in this period (7 investments surpassed 100M€ of equity)
  • The intense activity of the international funds (entailed the 80% of the total volumen invested)
  • The activity of the middle market segment, with a total volumen of 1,330.4M€ in 49 deal
  • The private national firms raised funds for a total of 1,573M€.
  • Divestment registered a total volume of 1,606.5M€ (at cost) in 227

Madrid, October 16th, 2018.- At 30th of September 2018, the data obtained by the Spanish Venture Capital & Private Equity Association through the European EDC platform showed an investment volume of 5,445.1M€ in 522 investments. Large transacions marked the volume in the first nine months of the year with the closure of 7 megadeals, which accounted for 66% of the total investment.

According to the type of investor, international funds were responsible for 80% of the total volume invested with 87 transactions. Private national investors accounted for 19.2% of the total volume with 352 investments and public national investors 83 investments.

By size of investments, the middle market (transactions between 10M€ – 100M€) performed excellently, with a total volume of 1,330.4M€ in 49 deals. According to the total number of investments, 83% received less than 5M€ of equity.

According to the investment stage, buyouts entailed 4,517M€ in 46 transactions, driven by the closing of the megadeals. The figure represented 83% of the total investment in this period. Respect to capital growth, 69 investments were closed for a total volume of 476M€.

Venture Capital registered an investment volume of 329M€ in 398 transactions, accounting for 76% of the total number of investments.

For the Venture Capital & Private Equity as a whole, the sectors with the highest volume of investment were Hospitality/Leisure (23%), Energy (21%) and Telecommunications (19%). By number of investments, the most relevant sectors were Software (228 deals), Consumer Products (54) and Medicine/Healthcare (40).

Fundraising

New funds raised by private national investors reached 1,573M€ in the first nine months of 2018.

Divestment

The volume of divestments registered 1,606.5M€ in 227 transactions.

56% of the volume was divested through “Sale to another VC&PE firm”, 27.6% through “Stakeholders” and 11.8% through “Trade Sales”.
